Why equal distance across the putter face is so key
We all know that there are two things that can go wrong with a putt. 1. The line is wrong or 2. the speed is wrong. Put another way, if you get the line correct but the speed wrong, you miss. If you get the line wrong and the speed correct, you miss.
Remember though, the correct line assumes the correct speed. A breaking putt hit softly, has a different line to a breaking putt hit firmly. Therefore, if you choose a line assuming a certain speed, it is essential that you hit it at that speed.
This is where new putter face technology comes in. The technology in some new putters result in the speed of the ball coming off the putter face to be equal, no matter whether you strike it dead centre or toward the toe or toward the heel.
So, with a normal putter, you may have the line right but you slightly miss hit the putt. The result? The ball comes off slower than intended, which means the line is no longer correct and you miss on the low side. With an Evnroll putter (or other putters with similar tech), if you pick the correct line and miss hit the putt, the speed will still be the same and the putt should still go in.
The point is that consistent distance across the putter face is not only about long putts stopping near the hole and thereby limiting 3 putts. It is also about holing more makable putts, even with miss hits.
